Classicism
Classicism indicates a significant movement that appeared in the art world in the 18th century based on the civilizations of Greece and Rome. This period was significant for it focused on capturing elements of balance, peace, and harmony that was caused due to overdone baroque period.  It came to an apex in the Neoclassical period towards the end of 18th century till 19th century. This clearly had an impact in art, literature, painting, sculpture and architecture. A construction in Rome captured the attention of many classicists. This was the archeological findings at Pompeii and Herculanum in the 18th century. The structures had clear roman influence which made classicist positively obsessed with it. Moreover, the French revolution along with the rise of Napoleon also escalated the rational thoughts of people which made them unite under the banner of nurturing the neoclasical art. This certainly helped with establishing order with a sense of nationalism. Other prominent artists who represented Classicism are Jacques-Louis David, whose historical works like “The Death of Socrates” and “Napoleon Crossing the Alps” illustrated the wonders of Rome, and the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova, who was acclaimed for his graceful neoclassical pieces like “Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss.” Like others, these artists showcased classical balance, clarity, and moderation in their works, greatly influencing the art world.
