Caricature
Exaggeration or distortion of a person’s characteristics for humor or satire defines caricature, a form of visual art. Used as a means to entertain or give social commentary, caricature dates as far back as the 16th century. Its peak popularity, however, was in the 18th and 19th Century in Europe where artists like Honoré Daumier and Thomas Rowlandson became especially famous for their sharp caricatures of influential people. Facial features, body proportions, and gestures are all attained using bold lines in caricature, aiming to pin the subject down in a light humorous or mocking way. As the most important part of art, expressing traits is art brimming with simplicity and wit. Clever exaggeration and sharp observation makes caricature able to make people laugh while challenging societal norms and stimulating dialogue on important issues. From hand-drawn illustrations to modern animations, caricature is still relevant today. Sebastian Krüger and Jason Seiler are modern caricaturists whose works have transformed and modernized this art form. Their artwork employs a combination of traditional methods and fresh ideas showing that caricature continues to be useful for social commentary and artistic expression.
