Afrofuturism
Afrofuturism is the synthesis of artistic and cultural engagement that incorporates fantasy, science fiction, technology, and Afrocentricism into one vision. It encompasses the futuristic innovations and stories where black people take the lead, and serves as a framework for progress in the 20th century. It offers an alternate reinterpretation of Black history, identity and a future that seeks to embrace the spirit of innovation while challenging the logocentrism of the white society. Afro-futurism focuses on the historic experience of the African diaspora, paying attention to literature, music, fashion and film, as well as the visual arts. The turns of the futuristic landscapes envision set alternates in which Black culture does not simply survive, but thrives. Afrofuturism offers an opportunity for artists and intellectuals to break the order of oppression, questioning its reality and take charge of the suppressed black realities. Afrofuturism thesis has astonishingly grown in popularity due to the work of Octavia Butler, who put race relations in the fore of her novels while dismantling the notions of power hierarchy and control. Sun Ra remains even today the most famous avant-garde Jazz performer to ever live, blending African cosmology with his African roots. His imagination and that of other Afrofuturism directors, like Ava DuVernay, allows for new incredible worlds where lack of representation and speculation for black futures do not exist. This movement was further solidified in popular culture with the rise of the Black Panther, which finally turned the conversation around the black community and their identity into a more positive one. Beyond being an artistic mode of expression, Afrofuturism refers to that imaginative freedom and self possibility that lies within resistance. It creates an avenue for Black ingenuity to redefine the future. It continues to inspire generations to recreate a world where Black excellence determines historical events.
