Genre Painting
In the 17th and 18th centuries, art depicting visual art from human existence was called ‘Genre Painting.’ Writing and depicting everyday life, which included ordinary people engrossed in daily chores, revealed the lifestyle, culture, and social order of the period, unlike historical subjects or legends. During the Dutch Golden Age, the genre gained prominence, and artists such as Johannes Vermeer became famous for detailed and naturalistic domestic interiors. Other prominent representatives include Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin and Pieter de Hooch, who produced tender and truthful images of social life. Through Genre Painting artistry, the triviality of life’s mundane realities was transformed into art.
