Grupo Frente
Founded in 1954 in Rio de Janeiro by artist Ivan Serpa, Grupo Frente was an art collective from Brazil. This group was one of the first to advance in Concrete Art in Brazil and is considered pioneering in its contribution. They aimed to depart from traditional art forms by their application of geometric shapes, clear lines, and vivid colors. The works produced by the collective were well known for their pronounced visual rhythm and harmony while form and color were often explored in tandem.
During the peak of popularity between the 1950's and 1960's they accumulated artists like Aluísio Carvão and Lygia Clark who in turn also added significantly to the movement. The collective sought through art the application of a universial gramatical base which could be understood irrespective of people’s cultural background. Contemporary artists across the globe still appreciate concrete Brazilian art for it’s minimalistic and geometric style which enables l it to be viewed through non contextualized lenses, which solidifies Grupo Frente’s continuing legacy.
On account of its unwavering dedication to investigating the intersection of art with mathematics, Grupo Frente remains extraordinary in the history of Concrete Art in Brazil. Grupo Frente was the first in Brazil to transgress the established norms of artistic creation and to approach form and color in a scientific way, thus enabling future artistic generations to work with abstraction and the geometric composition.
