Graffiti
Increased urbanization led to the invention of new and modern forms of art such as Graffiti which can be described as writing or drawing done on walls or other surfaces. Created in the late 1960’s, graffiti became popularized in the 1970’s and 1980’s in America as a form of artwork used by rebellious youth to depict social and political issues. Its prominence was advanced by renowned artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring who incorporated it into their paintings while further expanding the modern boundaries of artistic construction through rethinking the traditional understanding of art and space. Graffiti is often viewed as a negative form of art, and has been critiqued for vandalism, yet the impacts it has in a community cannot be overlooked. By democratizing art, it allows people from all classes and identities to engage with open social issues and gives freedom of expression to people who are otherwise voiceless. Even with legal restrictions and societal norms set against it, graffiti, in combination with street art, still manages to influence and evoke change in style and ideology and continues to transform techniques of modern day artistry. All told, graffiti is one of the most appealing forms of self-expression, cultural critique, and community participation that registers the heartbeats of different cityscapes and their complex mosaics. Its effects go beyond the realm of art and encourage debate concerning possession of space, public domains, as well as the place of art in social contexts. As one of the most flexible forms of art, contemporary graffiti holds a primary position and contributes to the debates of art and culture.
