Gouache
Gouache is a painting medium unlike any other because of its brightness, opacity, and texture. It differs from watercolors which are more transparent. Artists prefer gouache paints when they want to achieve a visually pleasing artwork with matte colors and smooth textures. Gouache painting emerged in medieval times but rose to prominence in the 18th century with the popularity of decorative art and plant illustrations. It was further popularized by prominent artists like Winslow Homer and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in the 19th century as they began using it innovatively. Today, Alain Vaes is known for his daring figurative gouache work further establishing its relevance in contemporary art.
