Motif in Art
A motif, when discussing art, is characterized as a subject, theme, or design element that is repeated numerous times, and that has some level of meaning or importance in certain artistic context. Most artists tend to use motifs in such a manner that they enable some kind of deeper interpretation, feeling, or visual cohesiveness in a given piece of work. Those motifs include basic shapes and patterns alongside complex symbols, or telling narratives associated with cultures and histories or even one’s personal life. In every piece of art, motifs are important in determining the style of art to be used and the movements that should be followed. Unlike rigid patterns of Western art, there are more of geometric patterns which appear in Islamic art, as well as pictures and motifs of saints who are orthodox during the period of Renaissance. Those pictures with golden backgrounds were admired during the reign of the famous artist Van Gogh together with his sunflower motif of the interlaced intricate gold motifs which characterize the works of Gustav Klimt. Grasping motifs within a piece of art absorbs the viewer's attention on a deeper level and comprehends the intricacies beneath it. Recognizing, then interpreting these motifs allows the viewer to encompass the complexities that enrich the art. Serving the purpose of a narrative thread, a visual anchor, or even a cultural symbol, motifs in art help viewers interact with the piece in an enriched manner as it helps connect the past with the present through creativity and expression.
