Montage
Montage refers to a concept used in visual arts such as filmmaking or photography where different components are united to form a single entity. Montage began to develop as a concept in the early 20th century, earning attention during the avant-garde movements of the 1920s and 1930s through the works of such notable artists as Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov. Using this technique, artists are equipped with the ability to express multifaceted concepts, feelings, or stories by intentionally placing seemingly unrelated pictures or sequences beside each other in a calculated and at times, shocking way.
For instance, filmmakers use montage to shorten duration, emphasize a character's internal monologue, or connect subject matter across pictures. This technique fundamentally changed the way narratives can be delivered in audio-visual media, affecting filmmakers from every corner of the globe. A perfect case of this would be Eisenstein's use of montage in visual storytelling when he sought to accomplish deep emotional engagement and political communication through imagery in his film, “Battleship Potemkin” (1925).
In the field of photography, montage refers to the collection of images that are arranged to form new meanings or points of views. David Hockney and Hannah Höch are some artists who have used photo montage technique to criticize and dismantle conventional methods of representation and approach the idea of reality in a completeness as opposed to a fragmented world. These artists inspire the audience to analyse the photographs in conjunction with the truth and perception by manipulating and layering images, thus questioning the very nature of visual reality.
To sum up, montage is a great technique that is versatile, can be used differently, and still remains a source of inspiration to artists in different fields. The need to confront certain primary narratives, engage minds, and achieve multi vaked interpretations makes it an important tool of artistic expression in modern days, which is why contemporary art embraces it so readily.
