Monotype
A monotype refers to an art of printmaking characterized by elaborate craftsmanship which one accomplishes in producing a single original piece of artwork. Unlike other styles of printing that allow for replication or issuing more than one copy, a monotype can only produce a single image rendering it unparalleled and original. The distinctive phrase refers to the technique of drawing or painting on a plate, made of metal, glass, or another smooth material, which is subsequently utilized to print on paper or another material. Monotypes are originated during the period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries where Edgar Degas and Käthe Kollwitz among others explored this powerful medium. Unique for its capacity to convey romance or emotion and evoke strong feelings, monotype is particularly famous because of the variety of approaches that can be applied or attempted in blending various colors, textures and even other techniques. The spontaneity and free spirit of monotype outcomes comes from the direct application of action, painting or putting on ink on the grey inking machine, easily done using brushes or with the aid of one’s finger giving birth to fluid and striking forms that are often transformed into patterns. Even further, monotypes’ richness in detail and ability to produce forms with the deep atmosphere has drawn William Blake and Henri Matisse who directed the use of the technique beyond the borders of traditional printmaking. Modern day art practitioners continue using monotype as a powerful and creative technique to integrate painting with printmaking. Its capacity to yield single, yet highly inventive images is attractive to diverse practices in art, whether it be abstract expressionism or figurative representation. By blending the old with the new, monotype is able to transcend traditional processes, which the continuously complexifies the imaginative and original qualities of art.
