Body Art
Body art is a form of artistic expression that uses the human body as its canvas and corporeal form. It includes tattooing, piercing, scarification, and body painting where the body is the center and medium of the artwork. Body art is believed to be an ancient practice as every culture had its own rituals that used body art as a form of cultural expression, identity, and communication. The body can be painted and the resulting picture is called skin painting. Body art painting in the form of skin painting, body painting, and other art forms, can be seen in the works of Marina Abramović and Yayoi Kusama. Marina Abramović is known for her endurance and participatory performance art's while Yayoi Kusama's work is famous for balancing between avant-garde and pop art with an unorthodox approach to body painting and installation art centered around self and self destruction. In the 1960s and 70s, body art emerged as a severe sculptural rebellion against body boundaries and artistic traditions. It was an emerging form of art not restricted by any kinds of artistic norms. The artists epitomizing this period of body art include Chris Burden who performed extreme self-mutilations, and Stelarc - a performer who had cyborg implants. Body art as a concept still continues to change and develop with modern contexts, and now can be seen as an expression of evolving ideas related to beauty, identity, and self in present times.
