Baroque
The Baroque art movement began in Europe in the late 1500s and lasted to the middle of the 1700s. The Baroque style includes painting, sculpture and architecture and combines its strong elements with music's emotional style and form. There was a shift in art away from the classic Renaissance approach's restraint towards a more flamboyant and dramatic appeal during this period. Baroque art is unique due to its use of motifs’ chiaroscuro through light and shadow to give a sense of motion and depth to an artwork. The purpose behind this combination of technique with bright colors along with intricate decorations was to inspire powerful emotions from the holders, while engaging personally. For his dynamic, expressive sculptural and architectural works like the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, Gian Lorenzo Bernini is one of the more well-known artists of the Baroque period. Bernini sculpted and architected many works of art. His use of light and shade in The Calling of Saint Matthew represented the Caravaggio style, which also helped develop this artwork. The Elevation of the Cross is another example of Rubens's incredible talent aided by his distinctive color palette bursting with notes of vigorous orangeish red. With a breathtaking opulence and dramatic style intertwined with great emotion, the Baroque period is everything in Western art history.
