Performance Art
In performance art, a practitioner’s body becomes a canvas to express their artistic thoughts. Different from the more traditional art forms, this genre focuses more on the being and live actions of the artist and requires movement, speech, and interaction with the audience. Performance art emerged in the 1960s alongside other contemporary art styles and served as a purpose to dismantle, incite, and evoke sentiments through the manifestation of the human body in space while defying the standard norms of established practices. The most crucial feature of performance art is its transitory nature; it is seldom captured through traditional art forms. In most instances, it is documented in still images, motion pictures, or written ways. Abramović is a distinguished performer known for her pain and vulnerability-centered performances who also contributed a lot to the rise of the art. Along with her, Beuys is another performer who used his art to convey social and political messages alongside the artistic ones. The practioners of feminist and identity art movements were at their peak between the 1970 and 1980’s, during which the eastern european embraced performance art. For example, Ana Mendieta was able to amalgamate her diverse Cuban cultural background with a feminist viewpoint, which enabled her to create unique performances about displacement and cultural identity, further entwining the themes with feminism. Performance art continues to provoke critical engagement towards understanding the very nature o human civilization and the realm of artistic practice, owing to the fact that the art form challenges people in a radical way.
