Fresco
Frescoes are paintings executed on a freshly plastered surface as it dries and crystallizes, allowing a durable and lasting artwork to be created. It is one of the oldest painting techniques; archeological finds show its usage dates back to ancient civilizations and remains popular until the 1300s. The utmost height of fresco popularity was during the Renaissance, from the 1400s to the 1600s, especially in Italy, with artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael painting the walls and ceilings of the luxurious palaces and churches. The extremely vivid colors and details showcased in the meticulous works made using fresco prove its capability and beauty. Due to its ability to remain untarnished, frescoes are among the most notable forms of art. Their use in a variety of contexts, both religious and secular, portray the technique’s unparalleled appeal. Outside the Renaissance, other pioneers of the 20th century that allowed the incorporation of social and political themes into frescoes are Diego Rivera in Mexico and Thomas Hart Benton in America. Their compelling and breathtaking masterpieces continue to engage the viewer’s attention as they tell a story behind the glorifying art. In summary, fresco is a traditional art form which serves as a reminder of the complete union of artistry with handiwork and craft, and intricate skill to produce it is already present through many years. It still exists in contemporary art as an inspiring technique that captures the imagination of so many artists. From ancient ruins to modern buildings, fresco can always be found on walls which will speak of humanity's pursuit of beauty and expression throughout the years.
