Original Sculptures For Sale Online

Sculptures are three-dimensional artworks created using a variety of materials such as ceramic, clay, wood, stone, or metal. The term “sculpture” encompasses a broad spectrum of works and is not confined to a specific category. This art form has evolved significantly over time and continues to do so with the adoption of new materials and techniques.

The history of sculpture dates back to the Paleolithic era, when early humans sculpted objects for utilitarian purposes or engaged in cave art. Later, Egypt became a hub for sculptors during antiquity, with the Great Sphinx carved from limestone standing as a testament to their craftsmanship. In the 4th and 5th centuries BC, Greece emerged as a major sculptural center during the Classical period, focusing on representations of the human body. From the Hellenistic period onward, sculptors expanded their use of materials to include marble and bronze, moving away from Egyptian influences.

Some of the most influential sculptors in history include Donatello, Michelangelo, Bernini, Rodin, Brâncuși, Moore, Kusama, and Koons.

Different Types of Sculptures

Sculptures can be created through techniques such as carving, modelling, moulding, casting, or assembling. For example, carving involves removing material from a raw block, using tools like hammers, drills, sandpaper, and files. Popular materials for carving include wood, granite, alabaster, and marble. Assembling, on the other hand, involves putting together different materials to create a single piece, using methods like welding, screwing, bonding, or wood joining.

Sculptures are also categorized by their form: relief or in the round. A bas-relief (low-relief) slightly protrudes from its background, while a haut-relief (high-relief) has a more prominent relief but remains attached to the background. Sculptures in the round (en ronde bosse) are fully developed in three dimensions and are not attached to a background.
