Juno
Painting by Lana Korolievskaia
60 x 50 cm • Canvas, Oil
Location:
Dnipro, Ukraine
There is the image of the ancient Roman goddess, the wife of Jupiter Juno, before the viewer. She is a protector of women, keeper of the sanctity and inviolability of marriage, motherhood. It is believed that it was Juno who established monogamy. The attributes of this goddess are a veil, a diadem, a garnet, a peacock and a cuckoo. Each of them has its own deep meaning. For example, many pomegranate seeds symbolize fertility. The peacock was considered a sacred bird in ancient times. The myths described how Juno's chariot was carried by a pair of peacocks. The diadem expresses her royalty, it is a symbol of the fact that she is the main goddess. In the picture, this goddess is not depicted in her classic iconographic image, it is only a fleeting vision seen by the artist in her color dream. So, according to the canon, the scepter in her hand should be crowned with cuckoo (another sacred bird) which was the emblem of a marriage that did not meet expectations. The author of the picture depicted them separately, apparently hinting at a successful marriage. The scepter is more like a magical crystal that allows his keeper to see the past and future. This may well correspond to the unlimited possibilities of a goddess of this rank.
