Gustavo Sanches de Castro (Espinho, 1986) breaks away from the rigor of drafting
to explore the catharsis of abstract expressionism. Since 2018, he has used purely
tactile painting as a tool for liberation, merging body and canvas in a tense balance
between chaos and tranquility. Influenced by the precision of architecture and
engineering, his aesthetic research progressively expands into three-dimensional
space, giving physical substance and volume to the visceral gesture.
With international exposure, key highlights include exhibitions at the Casa Portinari
Museum and the Pinacoteca Fórum das Artes (Brazil), as well as participation in
the Alentejo International Biennial. In Portugal, his career includes exhibitions at
the Lamas Museum, Forte de S. João da Foz, and CAE Figueira da Foz.

“Space Odyssey” (2020) is an invitation to explore an inner universe where the
figure of the skull emerges as a silent guide, leading us through labyrinths of
memory. The deliberately created cracks in the painting act as witnesses to past
battles and the spirit’s capacity to regenerate through its own scars.
Visually and structurally, the 100x80 cm artwork gains dimension over a base of
gesso and white paint, which adds relief and texture to the canvas. The
background, worked in shades of teal and gray, received a “crackle effect”
treatment to create organic fissures. The final gesture is visceral: gold, white, and
teal paint applied directly with the fingers, tracing luminous paths that transcend
the present. The piece was sealed with high-quality glossy varnish, enhancing the
depth and texture of the layers.
