Coco 9
Sculpture by Anna Kryvych
38 x 8 cm • Ceramic and glass
Location:
Kyiv, Ukraine
Coco 9 lies in Shavasana — the final pose of yoga practice, translated as “corpse pose.” In its classical sense, it is a state of deep relaxation and surrender, when the body rests and consciousness observes. Here, however, the opposite unfolds.
Coco no longer observes. Her Shavasana is not about completion or release but about automatic presence — a state in which the gesture persists while meaning has already vanished. This is not rest, but a frozen action, a posture emptied of inner experience.
The glossy surface, the smooth color — like a decorative shell preserving the form. Coco 9 in Shavasana becomes a symbol of simulated mindfulness, a gesture that remains after the subject has departed.
Series: “Breaking News: Chickens at Yoga?”
Cocos freeze in yoga poses — not as acts of meditation but as gestures detached from intention. Their postures echo familiar bodily rituals, yet they are no longer inhabited. It is a state of automatic presence, where action continues without an inner observer, without thought, without will.
The sculptures seem to rehearse meaning without understanding it. The glossy glaze acts as a coating that preserves the gesture in its final repetition. This body does not seek enlightenment — it merely lingers in an imitation of calm.
The series reflects on our habit of action long after awareness has faded — on how even the most intimate practices can become form without content.
