Resin
Resin used in artistic practices represents a substance created from tree sap or synthetic origins which becomes transparent or translucent after curing. Resin serves as a popular artistic medium for sculptural, painting, and mixed media works because of its adaptable nature and ability to securely hold objects beneath a shiny surface. Artists embraced resin as a medium during the mid-20th century when abstract expressionism and pop art movements became prominent. Both Helen Frankenthaler as a color field painting pioneer and Jeff Koons recognized for his large-scale sculptures have prominently used resin in their artistic creations. Contemporary artist Rachel Whiteread investigates resin's sculptural capabilities to expand the limits of materiality and form in her artistic practice. Resin functions as an adaptable artistic medium which enables artists to explore texture alongside color and transparency while introducing depth and dimension to their artworks. The persistent use of resin in modern art practices reveals its lasting attractiveness and ongoing importance to artistic expression.
