Open Edition
In the context of art, Open Edition refers to a type of reproduction where the printed image can be reproduced and distributed an unlimited number of times. This was developed in comparison to the more traditional types of reproductions and prints known as Limited Edition prints, which cap the total number of faces. In Open Edition realm, artists are free to reproduce their works beyond borders, giving more people the chance to experience art. This has become more widespread in the digital world where artists can share and spread their artwork like wildfire easily. Some other well known associated with Open Edition are notable artists like Banksy whose street art is famously reproduced and circulated, and tends to lie in the blurred region of popular and high art. Also, Shepard Fairey who used the ‘Obey Giant’ campaign makes use of Open Edition as a means for dissemination of his art and social expressions. In addition, The Yes Men: this collective uses Open Edition for their subversive artistic interventions aimed at controlling and challenging the corporate and where politically stratified power is exercised. In summary, Open Edition signifies an evolution toward more inclusivity and accessibility in art because these models enable the artists to pull audiences from different art communities. Such models develop an art ecosystem that is more open and participatory by removing most of the barriers towards entry and encouraging variety of expression and participation in art.
