Immersive Art
According to the definition provided by the Smithsonian Institution, contemporary immersive art transforms the viewer’s experience by enveloping them in the artwork, incorporating a cross-sensory application that makes use of the space around them. It is developed as a reactionary response to heightened digitization. The central idea of immersive, also transgressive art, is to shift entire environments, surrounding audiences with artwork instead of having them view it, thus truly placing them within the art. The beginning of the 21st century was when this style became more practiced, and even more so by the middle of the century, when technology advanced to a stage when artists sought out new ways to interact with the audience beyond their previously practiced mediums or techniques. An example of an artist shifting the emphasis on audience participation to art as object, is Christian Marclay in his installation The Clock. The work is a 24-hour-long cinematic collage that uses footage from hundreds of films to tell time and combines it in a seamless film and installation. Another example comprises the work of teamLab, a Japanese modern art collective known for their interactive, borderless digital installations. Grounding these examples is the profound shift in understanding the space where art happens from passive to active and participatory. Through engaging viewers physically with the art, immersive art transforms and encourages active involvement, while challenging conventional perceptions of spectatorship from passive viewing to self “step in”. Engaging multisensory stimulation allows artists to create emotional and reflective responses, increasing the need for critical introspection. Breathable in nature, modern technology allows for a combination of space, user, and immersive art, which creates limitless possibilities for artistic creativity and self-investigation.
