Iconography
Iconography deals with the analysis and interpretation of symbols and pictures within visual art, often in its religious, cultural or historical forms. It is used to simplify deep concepts into easy to understand words and pictures that can be narrated through the complex symbolism. The Romanesque Era of Europe, Renaissance, Byzantine period, and Iconography practices of Byzantine and Orthodox churches are some notable periods of Art. Iconography permits the appreciation of an artwork beyond its superficial beauty to its deeper message and context. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci, who was formerly known for his contribution of “The Last Supper” painting, and Hieronymus Bosch known for his highly intricate and symbolical paintings like “The Garden of Earthly Delights” used Iconography to create layers of meaning and symbol on their artworks. These masterpieces were made alongside and within the context of culture as well as religion. Artists use iconography in transformative ways iHowever, contemporary art is still in need of trimming. A tribal Southern US caricature, Walter, is as celebrated as the silhouette painter Kara Walker. Also, the street art advocate, whose identity remains concealed, and the person named Banksy constructs slowly but remarkably offensive micro-level political and sociological art pieces. Through imagery, they create eye-catching and sensitive pieces of art that are bound to draw attention. As an example, Walker manipulates the symbols to make the audience delve into deep discussions revolving around race and gender. This phrase speaks volumes and indicates the elevation of art to another dimension. \
