Hierarchy
Hierarchies are a basic topic of concern across social sciences, including sociology, psychology, and organizational studies. It means a system or a structure whereby the components are arranged in order of value, authority, or control. In social life, these are evident in the form of social strata, gender roles, or corporate structures. Hierarchies have always been central to the development of societies and cultures – from the feudal systems of medieval Europe to the caste systems that prevailed in Ancient India. The most accentuated periods for the dominance of hierarchy developed during the Renaissance period, where social ranking was revealed through paintings, books, and buildings. Hierarchies were painted by several artists but Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo did so tellingly. Their masterpieces captured the social relations of power which existed at that time. Such portrayals gave focus to the monarchical rule and the organizational structure of the religion. At present, hierarchies have permeated any and all domains, including government institutions and social media. The study of hierarchies is vital for analyzing sociopolitical systems, decision-making, and social stratification within society. This is important in informing social policies. Researching hierarchies aids understanding the consequences of power relations and authority structures on people and social groups.
