Easel
An easel is a quintessential item in the visual arts, as it provides sturdy support for an artist to fix and put up a canvas which he/she intends to work on. An artist can hold the brush at an angle which is most convenient to him, and paint while being in an upright position. Easels, like all forms of equipment, underwent various changes in design and materials from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is easy to understand how a painter, in the initial stages of easel construction, required it more than Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. In fact By the Renaissance and Baroque period is when the most stunning masterpieces were painted with easier accessibility through the easel. Noteworthy artists like Claude Monet and Mary Cassatt rather preferred these easy to transport, portable wooden easels for outdoor Impressionist painting. While wooden easels are excellently functional, portable lightweight easels made for painting outdoors became preferable to many. The versatility of easels extend beyond painting, as well as traditional paints, with modern artists using unconventional easel forms to express themself through mixed media and installation art. Ultimately, the easel is a representation of artistry and creativity for it aids artists in fulfilling their visions. The historical importance of easels coupled with their use in contemporary forms of art solidifies its position as an essential aid to the artist as they work. Whether in a busy studio or in quiet nature, the easel is an unyielding friend to artists of all ages, represents the spirit of integration into art and invention.
