Guardians of the Waters
Mixed media by Liubov Datchenko
70 x 100 cm • Art paper, Toned paper
Fish are an eternal symbol of life, abundance, and rebirth. In Slavic tradition, fish were often associated with water spirits, ancestors, and the soul of the world that flows through time. In this vytynanka, the fish is the center of the universe—its body seems to maintain a balance between the two shores of existence. The two female figures are guardians, water sisters, or spirits who protect the boundary between the human and natural worlds. The two figures do not simply hold the fish—they protect the foundation of life, the water that unites everyone. This is an image of maternal care, but also a warning: water remembers everything, and therefore must be respected. The symmetry of the composition symbolizes the harmony of two principles – earth and water, conscious and subconscious. The female figures embracing the fish are a sign of the protection of life, cyclicality, and love for creation.
