Urban Art
The art form known as Urban Art developed in cities and towns during the late 20th century. This art genre features multiple forms of expression such as graffiti artwork, street art pieces, mural designs, and installation art. Through Urban Art public spaces become living canvases where artists express social, political, and cultural themes that capture the essence of city life. Urban Art reached its highest level of popularity during the 1980s and 1990s with cities such as New York, Berlin, and Sao Paulo serving as major centers for its development. The urban landscape became a prominent stage for groundbreaking work by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Banksy during this time. The artists transformed public streets into their exhibition spaces while they subverted conventional art boundaries and provided equal access to artistic expression. Urban Art exists as a temporary form that stimulates both conversation and critical thinking. Urban Art disrupts conventional gallery spaces while involving the public directly which results in the merging of high and low cultural boundaries and prompts audiences to critically evaluate their environment and the societal function of art. Urban Art remains an evolving artistic form that pushes boundaries while inspiring new generations of artists to explore new definitions of art within urban spaces.
