Zoryana Pochynayko is a Ukrainian visual artist, theatre maker and composer whose practice explores the boundaries between the corporeal, the mythical and the subconscious. Working primarily with painting, performance, sound and moving image, she creates hybrid worlds where ancient archetypes encounter contemporary anxieties and fragmented realities.
Her visual practice is rooted in an intuitive and embodied approach. Drawing on mythology, ritual, Butoh, folk traditions and dream imagery, she investigates transformation, identity, vulnerability and the unstable boundary between human and non-human. Her paintings often emerge as visceral, enigmatic figures and landscapes that seem to exist somewhere between a dream, a ritual and a distorted memory.

Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, "Dionysus 2020" reimagines the ancient god of wine, festivity, and ecstasy in a state of strict isolation. Trapped in lockdown and entirely cut off from the chaotic joy of human gatherings, the deity finds himself imprisoned by his own nature.
With no external outlet for his boundless, wild energy, Dionysus is forced to turn inward. The visceral image of the god devouring his own flesh serves as a powerful metaphor for self-destructive implosion. The artwork illustrates how the suppression of vital, expressive energy transforms it into a toxic force that ultimately consumes the spirit from within when left with nowhere else to go.
