Beyond the Lines explores the relationship between identity and categorization through the symbolic image of a zebra. Its unmistakable stripes become both a mark of individuality and a metaphor for the labels, structures, and expectations that define the way we are perceived. Reduced to the essential contrast of black and white, the composition transforms the animal into a study of sign and structure. The zebra’s direct gaze shifts the work beyond representation, inviting the viewer to reflect on a fundamental question: how much of our identity is truly our own, and how much is shaped by the patterns imposed upon us? As the boundaries between the stripes and an imagined cage begin to dissolve, the distinction between freedom and confinement becomes uncertain. The painting suggests that the most invisible barriers are often those we no longer recognize.
