The Throne
Sculpture by Daphne Klagkou
50 x 100 cm • Blown glass, Glass, Ceramic, Ceramic and glass, Terracota
Location:
Lisboa, Portugal
A rough ceramic structure, resembling a chair or throne, hosts an abundance of glass flowers sprouting from its cracks and crevices. At the top, a glass-blown head sits calmly. The naïve facial design references death masks used in ancient Greece—artworks created for distinguished members of society, serving as protective armor to help the deceased navigate the afterlife or ward off evil spirits. The rebirth of nature surrounding it symbolizes the ever-ongoing cycle of renewal.
