Hermaphrodit
Engraving by Rose Meybeck
21.5 x 22 cm • Linocut
This work is inspired by the Metamorphoses by 1st-century Latin poet Ovid. These mythological poems tell the story the story of the minor god
Hermaphrodite. Son of Aphrodite and Hermes, he merges with the naiad Salmacis, in a lake. Flowers evoke the nymph. The half-god, half-human, is intimately linked to his environment: He is an aquatic being. The demigod/goddess is from behind, serene and alone like as they were thinking about the meaning of life. The change in texture between the engravings evokes the transformation of his body.
