Madalena Pequito

Madalena Pequito (Lisbon, 1996) is a visual artist currently working at FANICO studio. Throughout her career, she has fostered dialogue with other artists and key figures in the art scene, notably through the collective Vês.Três. Her work addresses themes such as identity, cultural differences, and collective memory. She explores the analogy between tree roots and human relationships, reflecting on the preservation of families, cultures, and the struggle for identity. Her pieces also reveal the challenges of an artistic path — including sacrifices, insecurities, and fears — and extend beyond painting by exploring space through pictorial installations. In 2023, she was awarded the FLAD Prize, which funded two artist residencies in New York: Kunstraum LLC and Mothership. Following this work, she was invited to present the solo exhibition “Shared Roots / Private Jokes”, in March 2024, at Freight+Volume Gallery, in Tribeca, Manhattan. This exhibition was supported financially by FLAD and institutionally by Camões Institute and the Portuguese Consulate General in New York. She participated in the international biennials Contextile (Guimarães, 2022) and ArtFem Macau (Macau, 2018), and was a finalist for awards such as Jovens Criadores, the International Arts Award of Guarda, and the Paula Rego Prize. She received an Honorable Mention at the Jovarte Biennial (2019). Her solo exhibitions include: Migas Para Um (Erva Art Corner, Lisbon, 2025), Shared Roots / Private Jokes (Freight+Volume, New York, 2024), and How to Build a Villain? (Passe Vite Gallery, Lisbon, 2023). She has also participated in various group exhibitions in Lisbon, New York, Macau, and Budapest.
