SOC.I.A by Vitalii Mariash

About SOC.I.A

Known as SOC.I.A, this Ukrainian-born duo transcends traditional artistic boundaries, transforming movement and music into a visual language of its own. For Artur and Igor Spaskyi, art is not just something to be seen, it’s something to be heard, felt, and physically experienced.

Who is SOC.I.A? Can you tell us more about how two brothers created this duo and artistic journey?

SOC.I.A is a duo of multidisciplinary artists that my brother Arthur and I founded in 2018 in Kyiv. We are driven by a shared desire to explore themes like duality, communication, and the relationship between perception and emotion within today’s shifting social and technological landscape. For us, art is a form of dialogue and activism—transforming personal experience into collective reflection. Working together allows us to bridge the physical and metaphysical through diverse media and forms.

Your artistic practice spans multiple mediums and approaches. Can you walk us through your connection with music and how you draw music in a canvas?

Music, Sound, Noises is at the core of our practice—it’s both a medium and a message. In our performances, we use our bodies and minds as instruments to translate sound into visual form—we literally “draw” music. This process allows us to materialize the emotional and physical energy of sound onto canvas. Our goal is to invite the viewer into a multisensory, transformative experience that goes beyond the boundaries of any single art form.

We know you are in Lisbon, currently with a studio at Mono Lisboa and Arthur in Paris. How is the experience in Lisbon so far and how is being apart for your art and life?

Yes, Arthur is currently living and working in Paris, and I’m based in Lisbon, where I have a studio at Mono Lisboa—an inspiring space with great energy. From the windows, you can see the city unfolding, and that view alone brings a lot of new ideas that I’ve already started working on. Lisbon has a unique atmosphere that reveals itself more the longer you stay. I love observing the city from above and feeling the presence of the ocean nearby. There are always new connections, places, and events emerging here. the cultural life is vibrant—something is happening almost every week. I try to catch as much as I can: exhibition openings, jazz sessions, jam nights. Even though we’re in different cities, Arthur and I are in constant contact and, in many ways, working even more closely than before. Being apart gives us different perspectives and energies, which we bring together in our shared practice—enriching the work and opening up new creative directions.
